The love-hate relationship fans have with Fifty Shades of Grey oddly echoes the relationship between Ana and Christian in the story. If you’re leaning more on the hate side, you’ll enjoy this Honest Trailer from Screen Junkies.

You may have noticed that we like Honest Trailers here on Hypable. Sometimes we need to step out of our excited fandom sphere and learn how to laugh at the stories we love (and their obvious flaws)… and sometimes the Screen Junkies just manage to vocalize some issues we have with certain movies, in a truly hilarious way.

Fifty Shades of Grey is certainly ridiculed as much as it is beloved (if not more so), and it would have been easy for this Honest Trailer to take cheap shots at the movie adaptation. But the video is actually very honest (…as the name implies), and brings up some important issues that audience members had with the story:

The cool thing about this Honest Trailer (their 100th, by the way) is how it focuses more on the book and the backstory, as opposed to just the movie adaptation. It also doesn’t focus too much on the fact that this movie is about sex, but rather asks: where is the actual sex?

A frequent criticism of this video series is that they sometimes ask questions that would’ve been obvious if they’d read the book (although, of course, one shouldn’t usually have to read the book to answer questions raised by the movie), but this one has a somewhat more reflective tone.

They point out most of the obvious issues people have with the story, make some on-point Twilight comparisons, and generally join in on the old jokes so easily made about Fifty Shades of Grey.

The song and “bad lines” parade at the end are pretty great, too!

What do you think? Did they truly give an “honest” view of what the Fifty Shades of Grey movie is like?
