This weekend’s Homeland PaleyFest event offered two major tidbits about season 5 which hold huge implications for the Showtime drama.

Speaking on a panel made up of Homeland showrunners and star Claire Danes, executive producer Alex Gansa revealed that season 5 will take place 2 1/2 years after the events of the season 4 finale. Gansa also revealed that Carrie will “no longer be an intelligence officer” and shooting will take place in Europe (“probably in Germany.”).

No other details about Homeland season 5 were revealed, but needless to say, that’s a lot for fans to chew on.

While it’s not confirmation, Gansa did hint that season 5 could involve Syria. When the executive producer spoke about how the writers take a trip to D.C. every year to assess the “political temperature,” they were told by people in D.C. “if I were working today, I would want to be on the ground in Syria.”

Season 4 left us on a big cliffhanger: Dar Adal sent Quinn on a black ops mission after the character grew tired of waiting for Carrie to decide on whether or not they could be in a relationship. With 2 1/2 years in between seasons, one could assume that issues like Quinn may be ironed out by the time we catch up with Carrie in season 5. Or, Carrie will have given up on wondering about Quinn because it’s taken so long for him to return.

We hope that Saul, who had a rough run in season 4, will be be working for the CIA again. He was itching to get back into the saddle until he was held prisoner by Haqqani. With 2 1/2 years gone by, maybe Saul will have recovered from the traumatic experiences he encountered.

Gansa insisted that they couldn’t share any more details at PaleyFest, so we’ll have to continue waiting and speculating while we wait for season 5 to premiere later this year.

What do you think Carrie’s new job will be?
