Tonight’s episode of Homeland season 4 was one of the most unique in the series’ history.

Between Carrie’s drug trip and Brody’s surprise “return,” it was one wild episode. Our Homeland season 4, episode 7 recap breaks down the exciting twists and turns.

“Redux” began with Dennis diving deeper into his relationship with the Pakistanis by breaking into Carrie’s apartment and replacing some of her meds with meth hidden in pill capsules. We already know Carrie is crazy without hard drugs, so as soon as we saw this happen we knew this episode was going to get intense – and fast.

What ensues over the next hour is a whole lot of mayhem. Lockhart arrives in Islamabad to hold separate meetings with his CIA team and the folks from Pakistan. Even though Lockhart’s pissed at the major screw ups Carrie and company have recently made, Ms. Mathison pleases him by announcing she has a new lead on Haqqani in the form of Aayan’s girlfriend, who may know what meds the terrorist is on.

In his meeting with Pakistanis, Lockhart openly suggests to the officials that they are on the side of Haqqani. The CIA director tells them that Saul needs to be brought back to the embassy, or their aid package from the United States will be placed under review. This, apparently, was an order brought down by the President, but it pisses off the U.S. Ambassador because she didn’t know about this until the meeting itself. It leads her to begin drafting a letter of resignation.

After the meeting, Carrie approaches Aasar, and it’s clear that her meth trip is underway. Despite that, she remains strong and gets an invite to the airport where they can review video footage that may put Fahrad with Saul.

Carrie and Quinn get to the airport, and Carrie is tripping hard, hearing insignificant noises very loudly and making bad decisions. When they make it back to command without any new evidence placing Saul and Fahrad together (the Pakistani government claim the camera that would’ve showed Saul getting on the plane was conveniently broken – ha!), Carrie continues to spiral and is ordered by Lockhart to rest. She sleeps several hours before Max calls and says that the nurse is starting a shift at the hospital.

Carrie goes to the hospital herself and tries to get Aayan’s old girlfriend to drop some info she could use. Carrie is at the peak of her trip now because she’s taken an absurd amount of meth pills at this point. She starts fighting the nurse and gets into a brawl with a member of security who she thinks is Quinn. She runs out of the hospital and tries to make an escape, but a couple of men capture her.

That’s when the true craziness begins. Carrie is brought to a house and believes the man inside is Brody. As viewers we were thinking: Has Brody truly been alive this whole time? Did Homeland actually keep this a secret from us for so long? The scene goes on for a solid minute or two, which further makes us believe Brody is legitimately alive. Carrie tells her former lover that she feels horrible because she let him die, and begins crying uncontrollably. At the very last moment, viewers see she’s actually being cradled by Aasar, not Brody, and the episode goes to black. Damn!

Even though it wasn’t really Brody, it was a wonderful moment. We’re so glad Damian Lewis came back to reprise his role.

Saul and Haqqani

Haqqani is riding with Saul when we first meet them this episode. The terrorist vows to stay close to him so he has protection for as long as Saul is alive.

The terrorist steps into public view for the first time since his supposed death and he’s greeted with what Lockhart describes as a homecoming (the CIA is continuing to watch his movements via drone). He’s reunited with his family for the first time in three years and invites Saul in for family dinner.

At the table, Saul and Haqqani get some one-on-one time with each other. Is it weird to say Saul is enjoying this? He gets a private talk with America’s most wanted man in an environment he never could have dreamed of. If he is liking this unique opportunity (danger aside), the fun ends when Saul is forced to watch Haqqani have sex with his wife. Clearly the terrorist doesn’t care what Saul sees so long as he knows he’s safe from a drone strike.

Later, the terrorist drives Saul to the Pakistan/Afghanistan border and drops him off in a cell. Will the United States find out where Saul is? This would be a good opportunity for a rescue.

What did you think of ‘Homeland’ season 4, episode 7?

Next week we will get to see what the Ambassador has cooked up with one of her Pakistani back channels. Thanks to her husband, she is no longer considering resigning, but Dennis isn’t going to be making her job any easier.
