Showtime’s Homeland is slated to return to television in just a couple of months, and today showrunner Alex Gansa is revealing lots of interesting new details about season 4.

Viewers know that the Homeland season 3 finale saw Brody finally bite the metaphorical bullet. His death was long overdue – the show needed to end the storyline between him and Carrie before the reality of it was stretched too thin.

Homeland season 4 will be a reboot of sorts with Carrie now working overseas. “For the first time” we’ll see Carrie doing the job she was trained for, says Gansa in a lengthy interview with EW. “We’re going to see what an intelligence officer does on the ground. How she recruits assets, how she deals with the foreign government and her country team — the people she works with in the embassy — and the host country’s intelligence services. That is a complicated and murky world, one that we hope is filled with intrigue and drama and adventure.”

Gansa says that America’s real presence in Afghanistan is what Homeland season 4 is trying to address. “What were we doing there for 14 years? When we leave is the Taliban just going to swoop back in and take the country over? What was all the blood and treasure spent worth? And when the military does draw down, who’s left behind? People like Carrie Mathison and Martha Boyd (Robins) — the CIA and the State Department people are the ones left on the ground when the military leaves, and it’s up to them to try and keep that country intact. Carrie’s on the ground in a dangerous place trying to break the law which puts her in a very charged situation.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Gansa says that the show will be time jumping about six months, at which point Carrie will have already had her baby. The child will not be with Carrie as she works overseas.

The lead character is much more stable than how we’ve seen her before, and there’s a chance of a romance between her and Quinn (which was slightly hinted at towards the end of season 3).

Gansa also suggests that Brody may appear in flashbacks of some sort because of the huge role he played in Carrie’s life. “I would always hold out the possibility that something like that could happen,” he said. “He was such as significant part of Carrie’s life that just to drop him completely would feel wrong, because Carrie is grieving for his loss.”
