The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is fast approaching its December 17 release date, and the studio has released two incredibly exciting clips where we see Smaug attacking Laketown.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’ world premiere took place in London this past Monday, and we got some great looks at the cast including Ian McKellen and Orlando Bloom.

The studio has kicked The Hobbit finale’s promotion in high gear, releasing multiple clips this week which gave us a look at the final battle, and an even more exciting clip which showed the White Council defending an ailing Gandalf. Today we see Smaug attacking Laketown, and a second clip where Bilbo begs Thorin to rethink his battle strategy:

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug left fans on a huge cliffhanger as the film ended with a cut to black as Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) headed towards Laketown. In the first clip we see Luke Evans as Bard making his way to a good vantage point. If you’ve read the book, you’ll know that Bard will play a pivotal role, at least at the beginning of the final film.

Early reviews of The Hobbit finale have been somewhat split, but seem to be leaning more towards positive than overly negative. We’re excited about the finale due to the fact that Peter Jackson has an excellent eye for large scale battles.

He and and his team have done an excellent job keeping fans involved in the process during this past year, and it’s definitely going to be bittersweet now that Jackson has said there most likely won’t be another Middle Earth related film. This is reportedly due to the Tolkien estate owning the film rights to the rest of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works.

Peter Jackson has stated that while the film’s battle will be fairly long, at just over 45 minutes, fans shouldn’t expect to feel too much battle fatigue. The film’s entire runtime has now been revealed to be 144-minutes long. He also stated that the final film will have 30 minutes added during its extended edition release.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will be released in theaters worldwide on December 17, 2014.
