The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies‘ first banner was released Monday, but now the first character poster has been released featuring Lee Pace as the Elven king Thranduil.

Promotion for the final Hobbit film is ramping up, with the film’s enormous poster being released earlier this week. It featured nearly the entire main cast at the battle of the five armies, including Smaug in Laketown.

Today we have the first character poster from the film, and surprisingly it’s Thranduil, played by actor Lee Pace. Check out the film’s poster below:

We’ve seen small appearances of Thranduil in the first and second Hobbit films, but he should play a larger role in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

The Elven king has a large part in the final battle and establishes relationships between men and dwarves after the battle of the five armies in The Hobbit novel.

We imagine the film adaptation will stray a bit from the novel, and it will be interesting to see how involved Thranduil is in the final film.

Look for more character posters from The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies to be released over the next few weeks. We’ll be sure to keep fans updated on new promotional material as it’s released.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies release date is set for December 17, 2014.
