The Desolation of Smaug is the highly-anticipated follow-up to An Unexpected Journey, which opened in theaters last December. The sequel arrives in theaters December 13, 2013.

Legolas is played by Orlando Bloom, as he was in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tauriel is played by Evangeline Lilly, who’s best known for her role on ABC’s LOST.

Lilly spoke about her new character earlier this year when her appearance was first revealed. At the time, the actress candidly admitted that she was confident some people would despise her character, but others would come to really like her.

She also suggested that a romance would be brewing between her and Legolas. “[The two characters have] known each other since they were children, and Legolas’ dad, [Elven king] Thrandruil, has a soft spot for Tauriel and sees something very special in her. So if you grow up side by side, and your dad has a very special spot in his heart for this young woman who’s a fantastic warrior, I think it’s hard not to notice her.”

She wouldn’t confirm a romance, but it is assumed that they will at least be flirting with one another.

The Desolation of Smaug is the second film in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy. The third film, There and Back Again, opens in theaters December 2014.
