His Dark Materials fans, meet Jopari! Andrew Scott has been cast in the upcoming BBC and HBO adaptation as Colonel John Parry.

BBC and HBO’s His Dark Materials adaptation is one of the most anticipated releases of the upcoming TV schedule and was one of the most exciting panels at this year’s SDCC.

The adaptation of the beloved Philip Pullman novels already boasts quite an impressive cast, with Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua, James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby.

Joining the talented cast will be Fleabag’s hot priest himself, Andrew Scott, who will play Colonel John Parry, better known to fans as Jopari.

The official announcement was made through the His Dark Materials Twitter account, which posted a picture of Andrew Scott on set with Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Colonel John Parry — a.k.a ‘Jopari’ — accidentally traveled to Lyra’s world, where he then went on to become a well-known and highly regarded scholar and shaman. His daemon took the form of an osprey and was called Sayan Kötör. He has a son, Will Parry, who in the His Dark Materials series will be played by Amir Wilson.

Andrew Scott joins His Dark Materials for the second season, which was already greenlit ahead of the season 1 premiere.

The first season of the show will follow Dafne Keen’s Lyra as she searches for a kidnapped friend. In doing so, she unravels a deadly plan involving stolen children and begins a quest to understand the strange and mysterious Dust. As she goes on her quest, she travels through different worlds — including our own — and meets Amir Wilson’s Will, who joins her on her quest.

His Dark Materials is set to premiere later this year, though an exact date has not yet been set.
