With the announcement of a How I Met Your Mother box set, co-creator Carter Bays took to Twitter to explain what fans can expect. Contains spoilers.
Yes, we know the HIMYM finale was quite polarizing. The creators, Carter Bay and Craig Thomas, know that too. They understand the pain, anger, frustration, elation, and all of the above that viewers experienced in the final minutes of the series finale.
Tonight, Carter Bays, through a string of tweets, explained their perspective on how the finale was cut and what fans who purchase the DVD set can expect. It’s also interesting to note that although the scenes with the kids (in which they mention how Tracy (the mother) had died years ago and Ted still has the hots for Robin) were filmed in 2006, the ending was still up in the air less than three weeks ago.
If you didn't like the finale, I guess that happens. We tried something and it didn't connect with you. I hope we're still friends.

So anyway, here's a bit of news: 16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings.

We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series.

We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too.

We're going to include that version on the Complete Series DVD as an alternate finale to How I Met Your Mother.
