Despite Phantom of the Opera having a 15 year head start, Wicked has surpassed it at the box office, and become the second-highest grossing show of all time on Broadway.

Wicked has earned a total of $1.12 billion, finally surpassing Phantom’s $1.11 billion. The undisputed champion remains Lion King, with $1.38 billion. These three shows are in a class of their own; no other show has pulled in even two thirds of a billion on Broadway.

Wicked’s ranking looks to be secure for quite a few years – it won’t ever catch Lion King, but its weekly grosses almost double Phantom’s these days ($2 million versus $1 million on average). Its biggest threat will be Hamilton, if Hamilton can sustain its current level of hype for another 20 years.

Wicked opened back in 2003, and has been one of Broadway’s biggest blockbusters ever since. It has played over 5700 performances on Broadway (to say nothing of its touring and international productions), and in a month will overtake Mamma Mia! as the eighth-longest running show on Broadway. (Phantom, of course, is the longest-running show ever, and doesn’t look likely to ever relinquish its title.)

As Wicked celebrates this milestone, fans are getting excited about its upcoming movie adaptation, which actually seems like it’ll happen after years of rumors, innuendo, and outuendo. Looks like the folks behind this musical will be defying gravity with their bank accounts for many more years.
