Hello Kitty, recently revealed to be a human girl rather than a feline, is coming to the big screen.

Fresh on the heels of the Monopoly movie announcement, the Japanese Hello Kitty brand is getting the adaptation treatment.

According to Deadline, Japanese lifestyle company Sanrio is producing a feature film based on the main character, and the movie will see a global release in 2019.

Now, let the wild speculation begin. If Hello Kitty had been a cat, of course we might imagine some magical fairyland inhabited by anthropomorphic animals.

But since the revelation that Hello Kitty is a girl, there are all sorts of (much more sinister) implications about how she obtained her feline identity (and why she has a pet cat of her own).

Is she hiding from the law? Is she under a magic spell? Is she wearing a mask carved from an actual cat? All of these scenarios would make for a damn good movie (but in reality, it’ll probably be a lot more straight-forward and kid-friendly).

Now, this is the place where we’d make some kind of sassy joke like, “What’s next, a live-action My Little Pony movie?” But it turns out that such a movie is already in the works. So… we’ve got nothing.

Are you looking forward to seeing Hello Kitty on the big screen in 2019?
