Helen Mirren has revealed that she’s been cast in Fast and Furious 8 — a happy surprise, seeing as the Oscar-winning actress previously expressed a desire to join the franchise!

Dame Helen Mirren, two-time Oscar winner and one of the finest thespians of our time, had a long-standing ambition to star in a Fast and the Furious film.

And now, this desire has been granted! This week, Mirren revealed to Elle that the rumors are true: She’s appearing in the eighth installment, although we don’t yet know if she’s playing a villain.

All we know is that she’s doing it “for the fun of it,” and that she only agreed to appear if they’d let her drive a car.

“I’ve always rather loved driving,” Mirren tells Elle. “I said, ‘I’ll be in it, but only if I’m allowed to drive if I do drive in it.’ But we’ll see. We’ll see how it transpires. Film is a wonderful thing and it can be so many different things. I don’t want to turn my back on any of the different ways movies can be. I love the movies. I love going to the films. I like very serious films, I love foreign films, and I love big, fun movies — as long as they’re well made and they’ve got good scripts. That’s the most important thing.”

This news comes after Mirren revealed her desire to star in the film in a Yahoo! interview last year. She said at the time, “I so want to be a mad driver in a Fast and Furious movie. My claim to fame is I always do my own driving … I keep putting it out there, and they never ask me.”

Upon hearing this news, Vin Diesel told Access Hollywood that “of course” he’d let her join the movie. “Who wouldn’t? It’s Helen. Amazing.” We’re so glad to see they’ve worked it out!

Helen Mirren is joining the already impressive cast of Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Charlize Theron, Michelle Rodriguez, Jason Statham, Scott Eastwood, Kurt Russell, Elsa Pataky, Jordana Brewster, and Game of Thrones stars Nathalie Emmanuel and Kristofer Hivju. Fast and Furious 8 is due out in April 2017, directed by F. Gary Gray.
