The hit graphic novel, Heartstopper is getting the adaptation treatment over at Netflix.

According to Deadline, Netflix is currently in the process of developing a series based off of the young adult graphic novel, Heartstopper.

Created by Alice Oseman, the queer graphic novel was originally launched as a web comic via Tumblr and Tapas were it amassed a huge following. Since then, Oseman has gone on to publish three book volumes of the series; the fourth volume is set to debut in May 2021.

Heartstopper centers on characters Charlie and Nick, who meet and become friends at an all-boys school in Kent, only to discover that friendship isn’t the only thing that’s blossoming between them. As the two begin to fall in love, Charlie and Nick also learn the importance of becoming their authentic selves, in addition to learning that there’s no right way to come out thanks to the help of their strong community of allies and friends.

Currently, Netflix plans to adapt the graphic novel into an eight-part series comprised of half hour episodes. Behind the camera, the online streaming giant has tapped Euros Lyn (Doctor Who, Sherlock) to serve as director.

Meanwhile, Oseman will be writing the series.

In a statement announcing the upcoming adaptation of the graphic novel at Netflix, Oseman said: “I feel incredibly lucky to get to work with a team of passionate, creative people who all adore Heartstopper and want to make it the most beautiful show we can. It’s a joy and an honour to get to re-tell Nick and Charlie’s story for TV and I am so excited to share it not only with Heartstopper’s existing readership, but also a whole new audience around the world.”

Currently, there’s no word on when we can expect the series adaptation to debut via Netflix.
