In addition to getting glimpses at the season finale of The Newsroom season 2, we also have a look back at last week’s “Election Night, Part 1” in a two minute look “Inside the episode.”

It’s always nice to see Aaron Sorkin get in front of the camera and talk about the characters and storylines he has created for The Newsroom. It gives an extra special glimpse into what the characters are thinking or feeling in a particular scene.

In this video, we get a look into how Will’s rough childhood growing up and helping to raise his brothers and sisters has helped prepare him to get the staff through this horrible ordeal.

Also, Sorkin talks about the Petraeus scandal scoop that the News Night staff get during The Newsroom season 2, episode 8, “Election Night, Part 1” and how he loves to begin a huge story like that with no more motivation than, “How can we bug Jim?”

It’s always fun to look at something as funny as Will appointing himself in charge of morale from the character’s perspective and see a totally different motivation emerge. Sure, it’s hilariously ironic for Will to be trying to keep everyone’s spirits up after Genoa, but when you look back at Will’s past, it makes more and more sense.

We already know that Will took on the leading man role earlier in his childhood than he should have, and played the man of the house for his brothers, sisters, and mother thanks to those scenes with Will’s shrink in The Newsroom season 1. According to Sorkin, it’s this role that Will draws from when he decides to boost morale and casts himself in that role. He is basically playing the clown at the child’s birthday party gone wrong, and when you look at it that way, it’s sadly poetic.

We also see Sorkin’s affinity for building major storylines from minor mentions in reference to the Petraeus scandal story. What begins as merely Taylor bonding with Maggie to annoy Jim soon turns into a major scoop that will seriously anger the Department of Defense, which is already quite furious over the completely fabricated Genoa accusation.

Now, whether the Petraeus storyline will be dealt with in the finale completely, or will be a link into the beginning of The Newsroom season 3 has yet to be seen, but it is certain to be a major hurdle the News Night staff will have to clear.
