Nordic Game of Thrones and True Blood fans, good news: HBO will be making an on-demand library of programming content available for online streaming!

Gizmodo reports that starting in October, HBO Nordic will give residents of the Nordic region of Europe (Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden) the ability to subscribe to what is essentially HBO Go, without having an existing cable subscription to the channel.

As such, Game of Thrones, Girls, Boardwalk Empire, Newsroom and True Blood fans in these countries will be able to either subscribe to an on-demand library of HBO content or purchase individual programs for streaming.

This is a big step for international television distribution, offering non-Americans the ability to legally watch HBO shows online.

HBO has commented on the decision to take this step (which allegedly won’t be offered even to U.S. residents) in the Nordic region, saying that, “This model is specific to the Nordic region, taking into consideration the various factors specific to these countries.”

And speaking on behalf of these particular lucky countries: thank you, HBO! Let’s hope this sets a precedent for international television distribution via the Internet (perhaps inspired by the web series model).

Note that there was no mention of Iceland, the fifth country considered a part of the Nordic region, but we’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
