It’s official: The Avengers star Jeremy Renner will reprise his role as Hawkeye in Captain America: Civil War.

Last year, Jeremy Renner hinted that he’d be appearing in the 2016 Captain America follow-up Captain America: Civil War, and now The Hollywood Reporter can confirm that he has signed on for the film.

This Twitter exchange suddenly takes on a whole new meaning:

In Avengers, Renner of course plays Hawkeye (cheat sheet: he’s the Legolas of the group). His most notable association is the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), with whom he had a friendship before they both joined the Avengers.

Johansson, who joined Chris Evans in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is also set to appear in Civil War.

The third Captain America movie (directed by the Russo brothers) is beginning to sound more like an Avengers follow-up than a stand-alone superhero movie.

The central conflict of the story will be between Cap and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), who find themselves on opposite sides of the “civil war” alluded to in the title. It’ll be interesting to see how Hawkeye and Natasha will choose to align themselves.

Aside from half of the Avengers cast, Civil War will also feature Chadwick Boseman as the Black Panther, Anthony Mackie as the Falcon, Frank Grillo as Crossbones, Daniel Bruhl as Baron Zemo, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, and Spider-Man.

Let’s face it: it’s basically the Avengers 2.0, if Thor and the Hulk were voted out of the group.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron opens on May 1, 2015. Jeremy Renner has another big movie out this year, Mission: Impossible 5, which comes out July 31.
