A Harry Potter TV show has always been an interesting idea to readers because it would open up the story in a unique way.

Let’s face it: J.K. Rowling’s insanely detailed Wizarding World would be better off as a television show than a movie because the former offers up much more time for storytelling. Imagine the 7 Harry Potter books each getting a minimum of one season. Imagine major plot points in each of the books getting a full hour dedicated to themselves.

It’s a cool idea to think about because we would learn so much more about the Wizarding World.

Unfortunately for us, J.K. Rowling is less interested in seemingly any part of her Harry Potter books getting a television show. When asked about the possibility by a fan, she said:

Look at all that sarcasm! J.K. Rowling seems certain that a Harry Potter TV show will never happen. That’s surprising, because the author’s first post-Potter book, The Casual Vacancy, recently debuted as a miniseries on the BBC. And her first post-Potter book series, starting with The Cuckoo’s Calling, is currently being adapted for the BBC.

In other words, Jo is a fan of converting books to television shows. So why is she against it for Harry Potter?

The most obvious answer is that Harry Potter was already adapted for film, and adapting it anytime soon for television would be way too redundant. Plus, Jo and Warner Bros. are currently working on another Wizarding World series which will open in theaters next November.

Rowling also has no time right now for a project that would be as big as a Harry Potter TV show. Casting and writing for a television series would take up a huge amount of time, and Rowling would have to be deeply involved.

If you’re craving more from the story of Harry Potter, you can at least look forward to the Harry Potter stage play opening next year!
