Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is sending her boy wizard to the stage. A play following Harry’s pre-Hogwarts years is now in development for London’s West End.

UPDATE (12/20): Rowling has confirmed the news on her official Facebook page. “What was it like to be the boy in the cupboard under the stairs? This brand new play, which will be developed for the UK theatre, will explore the previously untold story of Harry’s early years as an orphan and outcast. Featuring some of our favourite characters from the Harry Potter books, this new work will offer a unique insight into the heart and mind of the now legendary young wizard. A seemingly ordinary boy, but one for whom Destiny has plans…”

Rowling will not write the script but will collaborate and produce. Writers and directors are currently under consideration.

The British publication (which has a history of not always being accurate, so take this with a grain of salt for now) says that the show will be produced by Sonia Friedman (The Book of Mormon) and Colin Calliender, and Rowling will be a co-producer.

The Harry Potter play will reportedly tell “the previously untold story of Harry Potter’s early years as an orphan and outcast.” It will “offer a unique insight into the heart and mind of the now legendary young wizard. A seemingly ordinary boy, but one for whom destiny has plans.”

The Daily Mail says Warner Bros. is involved with the show’s development. Note that this is not a musical, but exciting nonetheless.

A quote allegedly from Rowling says that Friedman and Callender’s idea for the play “was the only one that really made sense to me, and which had the sensitivity, intensity and intimacy I thought appropriate for bringing Harry’s story to the stage.” She adds, “After a year in gestation, it is very exciting to see this project moving onto the next phrase.”

If this is true, the news caps off a year in which Rowling already surprised fans twice: First with the publication of The Cuckoo’s Calling, then with the announcement of a Harry Potter spinoff movie franchise based on her Fantastic Beasts book.
