Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuarón says he’s interested in directing J.K. Rowling’s spinoff based in the Fantastic Beasts world.

Approached by Vulture at a recent event, Cuarón was asked if he would consider a hypothetical offer from Warner Bros. to direct the Rowling-penned movie starring Newt Scamander. His answer was quite positive.

Akzaban was fun to make, and when I did it, I was invited to do the next one, but I didn’t want to overstay the welcome, because it was such an experience. But now? Why not? I do have stuff that I want to do [next], but a J.K. thing …”

Obviously intrigued by working on a new Rowling project, Cuarón added that he hasn’t even been approached by Warner Bros. about the idea. “They haven’t called me yet! They haven’t decided to invite me! Looking forward! At least to see it, because nobody’s invited me.”

The possibility of Cuarón directing the Harry Potter spinoff does not seem farfetched for multiple reasons. The director just worked with Potter producer David Heyman on Gravity for Warner Bros., which performed very well critically and financially. Heyman is set to produce the spinoff, and given the pair’s successful working relationship on two occasions now, the producer could feasibly approach the director with an offer.

Cuarón’s Prisoner of Azkaban is viewed as a turning point for the franchise because he brought a more adult tone after Chris Columbus’ kid-friendly Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets.

Would you like to see Cuarón in the ‘Potter’ spinoff’s director chair?

Thanks, Vulture.
