The first-ever Harry Potter Illustrated Edition arrives later this year, and today Bloomsbury has announced a special edition of the already-special release.

The Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone Deluxe Illustrated Edition will be exclusively available on Bloomsbury.com beginning in November and features a “pull-out double gatefold of Diagon Alley” plus “intricate foiled line art by Jim Kay on a real cloth cover and slipcase; gilt edges on premium grade paper; head and tail bands and two ribbon markers.”

The included Diagon Alley illustration looks very big judging by this photo released by Bloomsbury today (Click it to see a larger version hosted on the publisher’s website — seriously, this image is gigantic):

Now here’s the bad news: This Deluxe Illustrated Edition is $270 after Bloomsbury.com’s 10% discount. By comparison, the standard Illustrated Edition is a very affordable $21 on Amazon.

The Illustrated Edition of Sorcerer’s / Philosopher’s Stone is the first in a series of illustrated re-releases by Jim Kay and J.K. Rowling. Scholastic and Bloomsbury say these editions are “fully illustrated,” and they plan to release one book in the Harry Potter series every year.

The first Illustrated Edition will hit book store shelves this October and features a new Hogwarts Express on its cover. The books appear to be extra large in size to accommodate the text with all of the 100+ illustrations.

These books will only be getting larger as Kay works his way through the series. Just imagine how many illustrations Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix will have!

No word yet on whether or not Scholastic will be releasing a Deluxe Edition in the United States. It may be best for our wallets if they don’t.
