In February Scholastic announced they’d release the Harry Potter paperbacks with new covers. Today, we’re getting a little more insight on when we can expect to see the new designs.

The Harry Potter new book covers will be unveiled “over the summer,” Scholastic told this writer when he begged to know the answer on Twitter this morning:

While not a solid time frame for release, we at least now know that Scholastic is aiming to release the Harry Potter new book cover designs sporadically throughout the summer time.

The books have a August 27 release date and are designed by Kazu Kibuishi. In an interview the illustrator was asked how he drew inspiration for the new Harry Potter book cover designs. “As an author myself, I tried to answer the question, ‘If I were the author of the books – and they were like my own children – how would I want them to be seen years from now?’” he said. “When illustrating the covers, I tried to think of classic perennial paperback editions of famous novels and how those illustrations tend to feel. In a way, the project became a tribute to both Harry Potter and the literary classics.”

All seven Harry Potter books will sport new covers, and the box set enclosure – should you choose to purchase it – will have a new design of its own.

When the initial announcement was made, Scholastic said that the new Harry Potter books would come with “bonus material.” After this lingo disappeared from product listings in March, we reached out to the publisher who told us they had decided they would not move forward with that plan.

Frankly, we’re more excited about seeing these than we are new Pottermore chapters.
