Say goodbye to catching Pikachus and hello to catching hippogriffs! Harry Potter Go is reportedly coming in 2018!

Update: Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and Porkey Games have been officially announced, and the details are very exciting.

Here are additional details about Wizards Unite, the Pokemon Go-style app in development from Niantic and Warner Brothers (via Pottermore):

The game encourages you to step outside with your phone, explore your local surroundings and take part in a series of adventures, such as searching for magical creatures and bumping into iconic wizarding world characters along the way. Crikey. Who knows who you’ll spot in your local park? You’ll also be able to cast spells, discover mysterious artefacts, and build up your very own, illustrious wizarding career. Yep, we can definitely get on board with this.

And here’s new info about the group it’s being developed under, Portkey Games. There will be a series of games created for console and mobile:

So named because Portkeys transport wizards from place to place, Portkey Games will give Harry Potter fans the chance to be transported into the wizarding world and placed at the centre of their own adventure. The games will vary from mobile to console games, and will feature both new characters and – excitingly – could feature familiar characters ‘at different points in their lives’ from the Harry Potter stories.

As well as the familiar, you’ll also be able to visit new locations and explore new story elements, again, all inspired by the wizarding world.

“Different points in their life,” “new locations,” “new story elements.” Woah.

Original Story: Pokémon Go became a worldwide phenomenon when it launched in the summer of 2016. Shortly after the release of the popular app, there were rumors that a similar game called Harry Potter Go was also going to be released. At the time, that game, complete with video to back it up, was debunked as a fake.

But now, according to TechCrunch, Niantic is setting its sights on creating the app and having it launched by 2018. TechCrunch goes on to say that the app is being developed by Warner Bros. Interactive and its new “sub brand” Portkey Games. The name of the app is Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

Fans were ecstatic to hear of a Potter version of Pokémon Go when the debunked story had first appeared online. It seems inevitable that the success of Pokémon Go would lead developers Niantic Labs to want to create spin offs with other popular, magical fandoms.

Augmented reality gaming is in its infancy, particularly on mobile platforms. With the release of Apple’s iPhone X, which has built-in augmented reality capabilities, there’s a good chance the Harry Potter and Pokémon will see true AR versions of their games by next year.

The news has some Harry Potter fans worried though. Pokémon Go and its developers have had a rough start in its first year on the market. The never-ending bugs in the game, the server issues, and of course the disaster that was Pokémon Go Fest this summer (which you can read all about here). Hopefully, a fully functional, truly AR version of both Pokémon Go and the new Harry Potter version will be ready to go with no issues by next year, right?

The makers of Pokémon Go, Niantic Labs, has yet to comment officially on this news. The app might be timed with next year’s release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Then again, if it’s called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the app may have nothing to do with Newt’s world. Maybe we can look forward to a summer release like Pokemon Go received?

Are you excited to potentially be catching thestrals and hippogriffs in Harry Potter Go?
