Upon hearing the news that J.K. Rowling would be writing a Fantastic Beasts movie, I jumped for joy.

But it wasn’t because it meant more Harry Potter.

To me, the Harry Potter films were only fractionally as good as they could have been. Now, before attacking me with Fiendfyre, let me explain. I don’t hate the films by any stretch of the imagination. Even though they did leave me a little disappointed, I always enjoyed them.

My problems were simple; I never liked how many of the characters were written. While the characters J.K. Rowling wrote in the Harry Potter books were beautiful, full characters, I always felt like many of their movie counterparts were like Hogwarts portraits: they had some of the qualities of the characters, but were never truly them.

With J.K. Rowling writing the Fantastic Beasts script herself, this won’t be an issue this time.

Granted, the story that likely will be written won’t be one that we’ll be able to compare to her book skills, but it is still a script that will be written by J.K. Rowling herself. No matter what the opinion has been on her work in the time since Harry Potter, no one has ever denied the strength of the characters she has written.

That makes this Harry Potter spin off movie series very exciting indeed.

Fantastic Beasts will also give us a chance to see J.K. Rowling’s ability in a far different medium. Where as everything she’s written has been in the very textual, internal medium that Harry Potter, The Casual Vacancy, and The Cuckoo’s Calling are, it will be very interesting to see her work in a purely visual medium.

There’s no doubt that J.K. Rowling will succeed as a screenwriter, and it will be very interesting to see how much she enjoys the experience. I, for one, cannot wait for the amazing script that she’ll write.

But I’m more than glad to.
