Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is expanding its United States presence sooner rather than later.

Update (February 2019): Producers announced on Wednesday that the show will begin preview performances on October 23, 2019. Tickets will go on sale March 14, with registration now open for “priority access”. If you’re hoping to see the show in SF, you’ll definitely want to get on that list — It’s gonna be a tough ticket.

The Cursed Child’s San Francisco cast has yet to be announced.

Original story (June 2018): The Cursed Child will be coming to San Francisco, California’s Curran Theater in Fall 2019, producers announced Thursday. It’ll be the fourth production of the show in the world, and the second in America. The New York production opened earlier this year with the West End’s original cast, while the first Australian production is in the works for a January 2019 launch.

Said Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, “The beautiful and historic Curran in San Francisco is the perfect theatre for the next North American company of Cursed Child. We are delighted that ATG and Carole Shorenstein Hays have worked their magic to provide the ideal West Coast home for the production.”

The Curran is nearly 100 years old but was renovated in 2017. New renovations will take place for the massive Cursed Child set pieces and special effects. It holds 1,600 seats.

Dear Evan Hansen appears to be the last show that’ll run at the Curran (it has dates booked through December) before the theater begins preparations for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

The “West Coast home” bit of Friedman and Callender’s statement makes it sound like the San Francisco production will be the only Cursed Child show happening in the west for the foreseeable future. That means those in the Southwest (looking at you, Los Angeles, Arizona, Nevada, etc.) will have to hit the 5 North.

It’s too bad L.A. didn’t get the show. It would’ve been nice to do Cursed Child and the Wizarding World park at Universal Hollywood in the same trip.
