Everyone’s favorite new Internet meme is gaining even more notoriety as the song that is sweeping the world debuts at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 after Billboard’s newest change to ranking calculation.

Billboard.com announced the news today on its website noting that it will now calculate YouTube streams into every Hot 100 and genre chart beginning this week. As a result, Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” debuts at No.1, dethroning Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop.”

Billboard had this to say about the new calculations:

Billboard is now incorporating all official videos on YouTube captured by Nielsen’s streaming measurement, including Vevo on YouTube, and user-generated clips that utilize authorized audio into the Hot 100 and the Hot 100 formula-based genre charts – Hot Country Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, R&B Songs, Rap Songs, Hot Latin Songs, Hot Rock Songs and Dance/Electronic Songs – to further reflect the divergent platforms for music consumption in today’s world.

Mashable also notes that not every artist is happy about this. Singer Josh Groban simply added “Smh” to a tweet announcing the news. Baauer followed up by retweeting Groban’s tweet.

Baauer also makes a little more history in that “Harlem Shake” becomes only the 21st song in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 dating back to 1958 to have his first single debut at No.1.

Do you think that YouTube views should account for overall Billboard charting? With the age of the Internet and the use of YouTube and VEVO as means of listening to music online, it seems like the logical next step for calculating music. It should also be noted that sales and radio play are not being removed from the calculation – YouTube streams are only being added.
