Bryan Fuller may have his hands full tackling one classic franchise – but does he have his sights set on another?

Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller has commented in a recent interview that he would love to create a Star Trek television show.

Speaking to Crave Online, Fuller commented:

I think there’s something very exciting about the new J.J. Abrams-verse, and there’s also kind of an interesting reinvention. How would The Next Generation evolve from that? Where would that be? Where would that go? But there’s also… Star Trek is such a big universe, and there are so many places to go with it. I have a very specific idea that I would love to do.

Fuller is clear that there is nothing in the works, just that he has discussed his interest with the appropriate parties. “I haven’t pitched it, I just expressed interest that I would love to do a Star Trek TV show.”

Fuller’s first foray into screenwriting was on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, and it seems he hasn’t forgotten his science fiction background. “It’s a very near and dear property to my heart, and also a philosophy.”

We can certainly see a correlation between Fuller’s treatment of Hannibal Lecter, and JJ Abrams’ reboot of the Star Trek franchise. Both take the original premise and characters, and give them a little twist so that the final product ends up running parallel to the original story.

Fuller’s earlier involvement with the Star Trek brand and his distinct visual style make him well equipped to develop a television series.

However, Fuller currently has his hands full with Hannibal season 2, which will air on NBC and will run 13 episodes. The show stars Hugh Dancy, Mads Mikkelsen, Caroline Dhavernas and Laurence Fishburne.

Hannibal season 1 was released on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download on September 24.
