Earlier this month we told you Hamilton would be professionally filmed for an eventual release, and now that shoot is officially in the can — or, in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s words, a Gringotts vault.
A professional taping of Hamilton took place on Tuesday, June 28, marking the first time the show has been recorded start to finish for the purposes of a wide release. As Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel tweeted after the taping:

Original cast members including Jonathan Groff were a part of the performance. Before filming, Miranda went live on Periscope for a minute with the King George actor. It’s an adorable minute of Periscoping:
As you can see from the tweet below, Miranda was noticeably relieved to have completed the project. (The next “two weeks” refers to the time he has left playing Alexander Hamilton before Javier Muñoz replaces him.)

We probably won’t be hearing about Hamilton’s theatrical/television/Blu-ray release for a long, long time. The show continues to make gobs of money each and every week on Broadway, and will embark on a tour beginning later this year in Chicago. In other words, there’s no reason for Hamilton to shoot itself in the foot right now. Releasing it to the masses would give many people less reason to pay a lot of money to see it live.
Nonetheless, it’s exciting to know that somewhere deep below Gringotts lies a magnificent performance of Hamilton that will one day be released.
