The first two songs from the official Hamilton Mixtape have been released to celebrate the official start of pre-ordering.

New Music Friday has a special contributor this week: Lin-Manuel Miranda, who — fun fact! — originally planned to release Hamilton as a mixtape before it went to Broadway. With pre-ordering now available, The Hamilton Mixtape has released The Roots, Busta Rhymes, Joell Ortiz, and Nate Ruess’ spin on “My Shot” as well as Kelly Clarkson’s mix of “It’s Quiet Uptown.”

First impressions of these two songs are below thanks to my brother Ryan, a Hamilton superfan:

‘My Shot’ (feat. Busta Rhymes, Joell Ortiz, Nate Ruess) – The Roots

Unlike when The Roots were only producing Hamilton, this total rework of the show’s flagship song was made for the radio, not for the stage. This time, it’s clear Lin-Manuel Miranda gave Questlove, Black Thought and the rest of The Roots total control. Black Thought, along with Joell Ortiz and Busta Rhymes, take turns spitting completely new verses that only they could have written. Then each time, coming back to the chorus we’ve all belted out in our cars a thousand times. Nate Ruess provides back up on the “woah woah woaaaahs.”

‘It’s Quiet Uptown’ – Kelly Clarkson

Over an entrancing new beat, and a familiar piano melody, Kelly Clarkson takes on the role of Hamilton, Angelica, and Eliza all at once. Her usual pop-vocalist style makes a beautiful and fascinating cover of one of the show’s most emotional songs. The singer makes the track even more personal when she subtracts all mentions of the show’s characters from the lyrics, opening up the song to all of us.

The full Hamilton Mixtape artist line-up was unveiled Thursday morning and includes Regina Spektor, Sia, Wiz, John Legend, Ingrid Michaelson, Usher, and so many others.

What do you think of the first 2 songs off ‘Hamilton Mixtape’?
