TV characters love dressing up for Halloween as much as we do. And sometimes, they dress up like each other, referencing across networks, genres, and time periods.

Halloween is just around the corner. Have you picked out your costume yet? You might be considering a sexy Elsa or a classic Batman, or maybe you’ll go like one of your favourite TV show characters.

Here’s a fun list of characters on TV shows who’ve broken the fourth wall and dressed up like one another!

‘Friends’ sexes up ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’

We all remember that time Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) discovered that her sister Ursula had been using her name to star in porn movies, in “The One Where Chandler Can’t Cry.”

But did you catch the hint to a popular show running concurrently on another network? “Buffay the Vampire Layer” was the title of one of Ursula’s hit films, and a not-so-subtle nod to genre fave Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

‘Castle’ transcends space and time, as Nathan Fillion parodies himself

In a fan-favourite Castle sequence, Nathan Fillion’s character Rick Castle dresses up like a “space cowboy,” paying homage to his cancelled cult hit show Firefly.

The episode, titled “Vampire Weekend,” offers the most overt reference as he’s actually wearing Mal Reynolds’ iconic costume, but the ABC show is full of nods to the cancelled Fox series. Maybe they figure it’s fair game, seeing as the latter network didn’t want Firefly anyway.

‘Community’ rips off (read: lovingly imitates) ‘Doctor Who’

Community is the king of pop culture references, dressing its characters up like well-known figures both from real life and fiction.

One of our favourite recurring gags is their fictional version Doctor Who, titled “Inspector Spacetime,” of which Abed (Danny Pudi) is a huge fan.

Over the years we’ve seen clips from the “show,” and have even had Abed and Troy (Donald Glover) dress up like the Inspector and his companion, complete with laser guns and cardboard Daleks.

The concept has since developed into a spinoff web series, aptly titled “Untitled Web Series About a Space Traveler Who Can Also Travel Through Time.”

‘Suburgatory’ pulls together to form the new ‘Scooby-Doo’ team

The recently completed Suburgatory pulled off a great group costume in “The Witches of East Chastwin,” when the main characters dressed up like the cast of Scooby-Doo.

They actually bore an eerie resemblance to the cast of the live-action movie from 2002, but obviously we’re going to credit the original cartoon series with the concept.

‘The Office’ transforms Meredith into Sookie Stackhouse

The Office is another TV show which did great costume episodes – Jim (Jon Krasinski)’s “Book” face is still our favourite.

And who’d have thought Meredith (Kate Flannery) would make such a good Sookie from True Blood? Yet her imitation of the popular character was spot on.
