Halle Berry is no longer eyeing a part in an untitled movie that would have found the Academy Award winner playing a transgender character.

Halle Berry caused quite a stir online after participating in an Instagram Live interview over the weekend in which she teased what her next big screen role would entail.

During the interview, the Oscar winner revealed that her next role would “probably” find her playing a transgender man on the big screen.

“[The film is about] a character where the woman is a trans character, so she’s a woman that transitioned into a man,” said Berry during her interview with hairstylist Christin Brown according to The Hollywood Reporter. “She’s a character in a project I love that I might be doing.”

Shortly after the interview took place, Berry came under fire online where many pointed out the ongoing issue of cisgender actors taking on transgender roles in Hollywood. There’s also the matter of the fact that during the interview, Berry misgendered the character she was in the running to play multiple times.

It didn’t take long for Berry herself to respond to the backlash. In fact, the actress took to Twitter on Monday (July 6) evening to reveal that she’s since pulled out of the running for the part.

“Over the weekend I had the opportunity to discuss my consideration of an upcoming role as a transgender man, and I’d like to apologize for those remarks. As a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role, and that the transgender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their own stories,” said Berry in a statement.

The actress went on to say: “I am grateful for the guidance and critical conversation over the past few days and will continue to listen, educate and learn from this mistake. I vow to be an ally in using my voice to promote better representation on-screen, both in front of and behind the camera.”
