Hair Love, the Academy Award winning animated short film is officially getting its own series!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO Max has officially picked up a brand new animated series called Young Love, based off of Hair Love— the heartwarming short that scored the win in the Best Animated Short Film category at the 2020 Oscars.

The newly minted streaming service has ordered 12-episodes of the forthcoming animated series, which hails from Hair Love’s writer and director, Matthew A. Cherry, as well as Sony Pictures Animation.

Cherry’s Oscar winning short was, in turn, based off of his best-selling book of the same name, and focuses on an African American father who must do his best to figure out how to do his daughter, Zuri’s hair.

For those who missed it, or those who just want to experience it again, you can actually watch Hair Love for free via Sony Pictures Animation’s YouTube channel. Check it out below!

In Young Love, viewers will once again be reunited with Zuri, her parents, Stephen and Angela, and of course, her pet cat, Rocky.

The series will explore the family’s daily lives and dynamics, following along as they tackle everything from careers and parenthood, to social issues, and multigenerational dynamics.

Cherry isn’t the only one who’s signed on to work on the upcoming animated series. In addition, the Academy Award winning directors will be joined by Carl Jones (The Boondocks), who will serve as co-showrunner on Young Love along with Cherry himself.

In a statement announcing the series, Cherry said: “I am beyond excited to continue telling the story of Stephen, Angela and Zuri and further explore the dynamics of  a young Black millennial family we established in our short film Hair Love as an animated series.”

There’s currently no word on when we can expect to see Young Love debut via HBO Max, but we’ll be looking forward to checking it out when it does!
