Actress Gwyneth Paltrow and singer Chris Martin have announced that they are separating.

The news was revealed by way of a post on Paltrow’s website Goop.com, titled “Conscious Uncoupling.”

“It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate,” the statement reads. “We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us.”

Their attempts at making it work didn’t pan out. “We have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate,” they write. “We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been. We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time. We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we concisely uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.”

The statement included a photo of the two together sitting in the grass at an unknown location:

Martin and Paltrow met one another in 2002. The two Coldplay songs “Fix You” and “Swallowed in the Sea” were reportedly written for Paltrow in light of her father’s death. They were married in December 2003 and had their first child named Apple the following May. Their second child Moses was born in April 2006.

The two appeared together at the 3rd Annual Sean Penn & Friends “Help Haiti Home” Gala in January:
