Director Guillermo del Toro’s ambitious foray into video games, Insane, has hit a snag as publishing partner THQ has cancelled the project.

The decision was announced by new THQ president Jason Rubin during a financial call for the company’s quarterly results earlier today.

The rights to Insane have reverted back to del Toro, meaning he could potentially do something with the project with another publisher.

The cancellation marks a move for the publisher as it also announced its intention to stop work for “certain areas” that include mobile and social games.

“By canceling these explorations outside of our core business, we feel we can improve focus on our core game portfolio, which remains unchanged,” Rubin explained.

Insane was first announced in 2010 at the Spike Video Game Awards. Former THQ executive vice president of core games Danny Bilson originally brokered the deal with del Toro. He is no longer with the company.

Guillermo del Toro is currently in the midst of production on his next film, Pacific Rim.
