Guillermo del Toro is gearing up to tackle a beloved classic children’s tale over at Netflix.

According to Variety, Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro has signed on to helm a stop motion animated rendition of Pinocchio for Netflix.

The upcoming animated feature film is set to be a musical and will mark del Toro’s first time directing an animated feature film.

The Shape of Water helmer won’t just be directing Netflix’s Pinocchio — he’ll also be writing and producing the upcoming film.

In addition, he’ll also be working with the Jim Henson Company and ShadowMachine (the production company behind Bojack Horseman) to bring his rendition of Pinocchio to life.

In a statement announcing the film, del Toro explained why the forthcoming project means so much to him. He also shared a few details with regards to what fans can expect from his rendition of the tale of a wooden puppet who longs to be a real boy.

“No art form has influenced my life and work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio,” said del Toro. “In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world. I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember.”

It definitely sounds as though del Toro is going to put a dark twist on the classic story which will reportedly be set in Italy during the 1930s.

There’s currently no word on when we can expect Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio to premiere on Netflix.
