It’s bad news for fans looking forward to the third installment of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel and Disney have decided to put production for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on hold.

The third installment of the popular franchise was set to begin prepping for pre-proudciton, with principle photography set to start later this winter. A source close to the project, however, has confirmed that crew members set to start work on pre-production for the film have officially been dismissed from the project for now.

News that Marvel and Disney have put a hold on production for the film comes just a month after we learned that Guardians director and writer James Gunn was fired from the project in July.

Gunn was let go after Disney was made aware of a series of disturbing Tweets posted by the director between the years of 2009 to 2011. Despite the efforts of fellow Hollywood cohorts — including his GOTG cast, it’s becoming pretty clear that Disney is standing by their decision to part ways with the director.

As for where production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 goes from here, it seems as though the hold on production is only temporary.

“The timeline has been pushed out,” said a source close to the project according to THR, who also stressed that halting production is allowing both Disney and Marvel to regroup as they continue to hunt for a director to take over the reins now that Gunn has been dismissed.

There’s no word yet on whether Marvel and Disney are close to finding a new director to helm the third installment, but we’ll be curious to see who they tap to fill Gunn’s incredibly big shoes.
