Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hasn’t even hit theaters yet, and fans are already clamoring for news of the next installment.

We can all agree that Guardians of the Galaxy was a spectacular movie. Guardians 2 is shaping up to be even better — especially if you listen to its star, Chris Pratt. It only stands to reason, then, that Guardians 3 will be the best yet, right?

Unfortunately, movie making doesn’t always work that way (just look at the third Pirates movie or the third Matrix movie or the third Divergent movie — you get the idea). But that poor track record hasn’t stopped anyone from asking James Gunn about the next movie in the franchise.

Talking with Fandango, the director said, point blank, there’s no point in asking about Vol. 3.

“People are obsessed about the third one and they haven’t even seen the second one yet!” he reasons. “What if they all hate the second one? Then they’re not going to be so obsessed anymore.”

It’s a fair point, but no one’s really that worried about not liking any Guardians installment.

Then again, this could point to a bigger problem. “It’s all about what’s in the future; it’s never about what we have right now,” Gunn says. “I think if anything, this Guardians is about what they are in this moment — and I think that’s what it’s been like for me working on the movie. It really isn’t about thinking down the road and how can we make something great someday — it’s how can we make something great right now in this moment that will affect people’s lives for the better. That’s what Vol. 2 is.”

Fandango couldn’t help but squeeze in one more question about Vol. 3, however. And I can’t say I blame them — everyone will be wondering if Gunn will stick around to direct the next sequel.

“Listen, we’re figuring it all out,” Gunn says. “We’ll know soon. Let me take a couple of breaths before I say what I’m going to do next.”

And you know what? That’s more than a fair answer.
