As with the first soundtrack, the music for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 is era-appropriate, including more or less well-known hits from the 1960s-80s.

Since this movie is more about Peter’s father, a lot of the songs directly reflect on this character (which makes sense, seeing as it was ostensibly put together by Peter’s mother).

One example is George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord,” of which Gunn says, “It was one of the first songs that I picked out to try to use in the movie and it has to do a little bit with the origin of Ego [Peter’s father, played by Kurt Russell]. And there’s this big creation myth about how he came about and it was kind of lined up with that. I’ve always been into Hindu creation myths and there’s some similarities there.”

Gunn further reveals that the two songs “most deeply embedded into the fibers of the film” are Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” and Looking Glass’ “Brandy You’re a Fine Girl.”

The former is used a couple of times in the movie, and is “about the Guardians, at least in the way we use it.” Meanwhile, “Brandy” is “an incredibly important song in the movie.”

The soundtrack is released on April 21, and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 hits cinemas May 5!
