Following a leak yesterday, Marvel has shared an official look at Guardians of the Galaxy’s supreme villain Thanos.

The character, pictured above, doesn’t take on a major role in Guardians of the Galaxy, but the villain will be stepping up to the plate in Marvel’s Phase 3 beginning with Avengers: Age of Ultron next year and then into an even larger role with The Avengers 3 (he provided Loki with his army in the first film, remember).

Fans of Marvel will immediately recognize that Thanos looks loyal to the character’s appearance in the comic books:

Thanos is voiced by Josh Brolin, who made an appearance at the Marvel panel during San Diego Comic-Con last week sporting his Infinity Gauntlet. The weapon is his most memorable in the comic series:

Since Thanos doesn’t have a major role other than overlord in Guardians of the Galaxy, this official release by Marvel isn’t a spoiler. The first look was a part of this Phase 1 and Phase 2 highlight reel created by Marvel:

Brolin was rumored to be voicing the role of Thanos since May, but it wasn’t official until Robert Downey Jr. announced it at Comic-Con last weekend during their panel for The Avengers: Age of Ultron. The actor came out looking proud of his new found Infinity Gauntlet and his voice can be heard in this weekend’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

To celebrate today’s release of Guardians, we interviewed co-star Michael Rooker on his role as Yondu, who is a hunter of sorts.

What plans do you think Marvel has for Thanos in the years ahead?
