While Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is set to be released August 1, 2014, there’s a report that the studio has already scheduled a sequel for the film to hit theaters in 2016.

Ever since Marvel hit it big with Iron Man back in 2008, they’ve been planning their films’ release dates years in advance. Which is why we aren’t surprised to hear a rumor that Guardians of the Galaxy, which hasn’t even hit theaters, will see a sequel in 2016.

The sequel rumor comes from JoBlo, who points out that there are two films that Marvel has confirmed to be working on for 2016 that have yet to be announced. Their source tells them that Marvel is very happy with the way Guardians of the Galaxy has turned out and they’re willing to go ahead and set the sequel’s release date for May 6, 2016.

This would put its release date in the same weekend as Warner Bros. recently delayed Batman Vs Superman movie, which will also hit theaters on May 6, 2016.

A Guardians of the Galaxy trailer was rumored to be released during this past Sunday’s Super Bowl, but it came and went with half a dozen other film trailers premiering. While footage from the film was well received at Comic-Con, Guardians is still somewhat of a wildcard for Marvel/Disney.

They’re untested characters and a whole new world that doesn’t have the fanbase that we’ve seen gather for Avengers or Iron Man. Fans are excited for it though, as it’s most likely a nice step away from what Marvel fans have become accustomed to – but will that mean enough financial success to warrant a sequel?

They also confirm that an animated series based on Guardians of the Galaxy is also currently in development for a fall 2015 debut and it would have strong ties to Guardians of the Galaxy’s sequel.

It’s all hearsay as of now, but Marvel has to fill those slots in 2016 and we look forward to finding out directly from the studio which movies they’ll be.

The highly-anticipated Marvel film features the intergalactic group of Guardians, led Star Lord, as they make a desperate stand to save the galaxy. Bradley Cooper voices Rocket Raccoon and is joined by Vin Diesel as the tree-like Groot, with Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista filling out the leading roles. James Gunn directed and wrote the script.
