Guardians of the Galaxy filming is underway, and MTV caught up with director James Gunn where he discussed how the film would fit into Marvel’s cinematic universe and who his favorite character is in the film.

In the Comic-Con interview with the Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn revealed quite a few new details concerning the film. Gunn says that they’ve been filming for about two weeks, which is incredible considering they showed a full-length trailer at Marvel’s Comic-Con panel just last night.

He also revealed that his favorite character in Guardians is Rocket Raccoon. He says he’s focused on getting the character right, and he did that by starting backwards from the fact that it’s a talking Raccoon and had to decide how to fit him on screen where he could eventually be side by side with such realistic characters as Iron Man.

Watch MTV’s interview below and find out how Gunn went about casting the film, including loads of additional Guardians of the Galaxy details.

Despite Guardians of the Galaxy starting filming just two weeks ago, we were still fairly unsure who each actor would be playing in the film. Last week we finally received confirmation of who most of the characters would be portrayed by.

Benicio del Toro will reportedly play The Collector, while Lee Pace is playing Ronan The Accuser, who was confirmed a few weeks back. We’ve also found out that Doctor Who‘s Karen Gillan will be playing Nebula, a pirate that is said to be the granddaughter of Thanos.

She revealed at Comic-Con last night that she has shaved her head for the role, no pictures have been released yet but our own Andrew Sims was at the panel to confirm that she was wearing a wig and later threw her wig into the audience as they erupted into applause.

We’re still unsure who will play Rocket Raccoon, certainly the most difficult character to successfully portray. It’s interesting that we still don’t know who is playing Rocket, as he seems to be James Gunn’s favorite character.

A very interesting rumor has been that David Tennant could be voicing the character, but this is a mega-stretch, so stay calm Doctor Who fans.

Guardians of the Galaxy has a massively talented cast including Academy Award winning actress Glenn Close, John C. Reilly, and Benicio Del Toro. Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan has been cast as Nebula as mentioned.

Zoe Saldana has been cast as Gamora, along with actor Chris Pratt, who has been cast as the lead in Guardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord, and WWE star Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer).

Michael Rooker, the massive fan-favorite of The Walking Dead series, has also signed on to play Yondu in Marvel’s space-thriller.

Actor Benicio del Toro is known for playing some menacing roles in the past, and while we thought he may be playing Thanos, we now know he’s been cast as The Collector, who is one of the oldest living beings in the Marvel universe. We’re definitely excited to see how his character will be included in Guardians of the Galaxy.

It was announced in late May that six time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close will be joining Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which has just snowballed into an incredibly talented cast that will be exciting to watch unfold. Her role is not yet known, but she’ll most likely be a major part in Nova Corps.

Guardians of the Galaxy follows a futuristic, alien superhero team protecting the galaxy from evil, led by Peter Quill. The team first appeared in Marvel comics in 1969, but weren’t given their own series until the 1990s. Check out our latest news on Guardians of the Galaxy, as the film will hit theaters August 1, 2014.
