Marvel released Guardians of the Galaxy’s DVD and Blu-ray on December 9, and while its bonus features aren’t plentiful, the film is a visual masterpiece.

Guardians of the Galaxy was a monster hit for Marvel, bringing in $771 million worldwide. It took in over $330 million at the domestic box office, making it the highest grossing film at the domestic box office in 2014.

The sequel is already being written and the cast have already given some hints as to where the intergalactic crew of misfits will be headed, but today we take a look at Guardians of the Galaxy’s DVD/Blu-ray.

Those who saw Guardians in theaters know that it was an incredibly original and exciting film, but seeing it on Blu-ray is almost magical. With two entirely CGI characters in the main superhero group, one would think that they could end up taking the viewer out of the experience, but it’s just not the case.

Possibly the most impressive CGI in quite some time, Guardians of the Galaxy’s contrast between brightly colored characters and gritty backgrounds make for one of the most enjoyable experiences on Blu-ray this year.

In the last few years we’ve seen films get darker and darker, but director James Gunn clearly didn’t allow other films to persuade him in any way, as he puts green and purple aliens on screen alongside humans, and it meshes surprisingly well. The film’s action sequences pop with brightly colored spaceships and guns that fire bright blue and red lasers.

It’s a space opera in every sense of the word, which is coupled with an incredible soundtrack that has become immensely popular since the film hit theaters back in August. Even if someone doesn’t like superhero movies, it’s hard not to enjoy simply watching Guardians of the Galaxy on Blu-ray.

Guardians of the Galaxy’s DVD/Blu-ray is packed with never-before-seen deleted scenes, gag reels, and an exclusive look at Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Check out the film’s box art below, as well as the bonus features (click to enlarge):

While Guardians of the Galaxy’s Blu-ray bonus features feel a bit light, they do include some behind-the-scenes looks into how Gunn created this awe-inspiring world. The sets look completely real, and things that you would assume had to be CGI are entirely real props and sets.

There’s also an extended look at The Avengers: Age of Ultron, but if you follow the sequel’s news you’ll most likely have seen some, if not all, of the footage previously. Director Joss Whedon does give some commentary that we hadn’t heard before, but overall Guardians‘ DVD/Blu-ray isn’t worth picking up if you’re only interested in Age of Ultron footage.

Guardians of the Galaxy’s Blu-ray has been one of Marvel’s most anticipated in years, and while we feel the studio could have included much more behind-the-scenes footage of this impressive and hilarious cast, it should undoubtedly be on your Christmas list this year (if you haven’t bought it already).

Two-time Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper voices the machine-gun-wielding Rocket Raccoon and is joined by Vin Diesel as the fan favorite character Groot, with Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan and Dave Bautista filling out the starring roles.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2’s release date has been set for May 5, 2017.
