Chris Pratt’s dad in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 has been widely speculated about, and now it’s been confirmed that Kurt Russell may soon join as Star Lord’s father in a new interview.

Update: During an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Kurt Russell has confirmed that he is in negotiations to star in Guardians of the Galaxy’s sequel as Star Lord’s father.

In the interview The Hateful Eight actor says, “I literally got a phone call two days ago about this. I’ve never seen Guardians of the Galaxy so I don’t know anything about it. Many times I’ve heard ‘That’s a really fun movie, a really good movie [with] great characters.’ I don’t know it! So, I didn’t realize that [James Gunn] had written and directed it, but we talked to each other on the phone. And I just had to be honest and say, ‘Thank you for considering me, I have to read [the script], and I have to watch the [first] movie because I can’t bring anything for you [right now]. I’ve got nothing to offer here. So, I’m amazed to get asked about this because everybody knows more about it than I do… it’s a little weird.”

It’s funny to hear that Russell hasn’t even heard about Guardians of the Galaxy, but we instantly thought he’d be a great addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel as Star Lord’s father. The first film was one of Marvel’s best original films, and the start to a great franchise, so we hope to hear that Russell works out a multi-picture contract with Marvel.

TheWrap reports that The Hateful Eight star is being eyed for the unique role of Star Lord’s dad, who will reportedly play a pivotal role in Guardians of the Galaxy’s sequel.

While Marvel has yet to officially offer Russell the role of Star Lord’d father just yet, the report suggests that meetings are taking place in the next few weeks.

Director James Gunn revealed back in April that family will play a big part in the sequel, saying, “There’s a lot of stuff I’m excited about in the new movie. I’m still excited about Star-Lord’s character and where he goes. At its heart, Guardians is a story about families, and if the first film was about him and his mother, this is a story about fathers. So it’s exciting to go there.”

Responding to the report, Gunn avoided confirming the story but didn’t deny it either:

While most directors would just ignore the reports, Gunn is very active on social media, so he probably felt the need to say something.

It’ll be interesting to find out more about Star Lord’s family history, as the first film started with his mom passing and him being abducted by a spacecraft. We hope to learn more about his father, and Russell would be a great fit for the role.

Kurt Russell has been pretty busy lately, with The Hateful Eight hitting theaters in the next few weeks, and he’s just coming off the massively popular Furious 7, which took in over a billion at the worldwide box office. He’ll also star alongside Mark Wahlberg in Deepwater Horizon.

Chris Pratt will return as Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, along with Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, and Pom Klementieff.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits cinemas on May 5, 2017.
