Marvel announced five new release dates for future films last night and now James Gunn has confirmed that he’ll be directing Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Late last night Marvel revealed that they have five new films set to hit theaters from 2017 to 2019 and many fans have been wondering what superheroes will be filling the slots. Now it looks like Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will definitely be taking up one of the five slots.

In an interview with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn says, “I’m actually in a somewhat weird position because if the movie does well, then I’m gonna make the sequel. And if it does okay then, well, I’ve already been offered other movies but I can only do those other movies if I don’t do the sequel, so it’s a weird situation.”

Considering Guardians of the Galaxy’s early screening has achieved incredibly positive reviews, we imagine there’s no doubt in Marvel’s mind that a sequel will be made.

While we imagine Gunn is a bit bummed he won’t get a chance to work on the other projects he’s been offered, it seems like he’s hit a homerun with his first film under Marvel’s wing. Despite the studio’s success, it’s needed some fresh content for a few years now.

Guardians seems like the perfect new trilogy for fans to look forward to as the first film hits theaters in just a few weeks.

Marvel president Kevin Feige has already said in previous interviews that there are “too many stories in the comics not to do a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel.”

With the combination of early positive buzz and Marvel’s president behind the new film’s potential sequels, there’s no doubt we’ll be seeing James Gunn direct Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

The real question is: Which release date will it take up in the recently announced slate?
