Grey’s Anatomy and its creator picked up awards at the 2012 Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Awards on Saturday.

ABC’s long-running medical drama beat out Degrassi, Pretty Little Liars, Torchwood: Miracle Day and Shameless for GLAAD’s outstanding drama series of the year award, after featuring Callie and Arizona’s wedding last season.

Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey’s, Private Practice and Scandal, took home the Golden Gate Award, which is presented each year to media professionals who have increased the visibility of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

“I think in telling LGBT stories, I’m telling everyone’s story,” she said during her acceptance speech. “Love is, in fact, universal, right?…I want my daughters to grow up in a world in which there is more love than hate. I want them to know a world where everyone is free. So that’s why I write the stories that I do, because everyone should be free. Love should be universal. And no one should get to tell me or you or my kid who they can love, or who they can marry or have babies with.”

Glee‘s Dianna Agron hosted the event over the weekend, which also honored Facebook and Wells Fargo for their support of the LGBT community. Lady Gaga, Josh Hutcherson and Modern Family were among the winners announced at the two previous GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies held in New York and Los Angeles earlier this year.
