Hallelujah, the return of Grey’s Anatomy is just a few weeks away! To get ready we’re breaking down everything you need to know beforehand!

The basics:

The series will continue in the same time slot, Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. Season 14 will kick off on September 28 with a two hour episode.

Shonda Rhimes is heading to Netflix:

For a long time, Shonda Rhimes had a lot of control over her shows on ABC. But the past year hasn’t been so kind to her shows, with two of them getting cancelled. So it’s not super surprising that Rhimes announced she’s bringing her creative talent to Netflix.

So what does that mean for Grey’s Anatomy and her other TGIT shows? Not much. They’re staying put, as is the new spinoff show already in production. But you can bet that Rhimes will be putting all of her energy into the new shows on Netflix which will leave less time for Grey’s Anatomy creatively.

Krista Vernoff returns as showrunner:

Krista Vernoff is no stranger to the show, but it has been a while since she’s worked on it. Vernoff previously held the title of head writer and executive producer for Grey’s Anatomy during the first seven seasons. With the shuffling going on at Shondaland, she’s back as a co-showrunner. Vernoff is reportedly looking to bring back a more light-hearted, fun version of the show to our screens.

In her new role, Vernoff wrote the season 14 premiere.

Kim Raver is returning:

Instagram debut! Teddy returns!

A post shared by Kim Raver (@kimraver) on

At the end of last season, fans heard Dr. Teddy Altman brought back up when Owen’s sister was discovered. With the continuation of that storyline in season 14, Kim Raver is returning to the show to play Teddy. It’s being reported that her appearance is as a guest arc but it’s not clear how many episode she’ll be in.

Matthew Morrison will appear as Jo’s husband again:

Last season fans were introduced to Dr. Paul Stadler (played by Matthew Morrison) when Alex went to hunt him down. However, nothing really occurred from the meeting other than Alex having a bunch of mini-freak outs about getting in trouble again.

It looks like Matthew Morrison will be appearing in season 14 for a longer guest arc. We’re assuming this means he’ll be coming to Seattle and will most likely find out about Jo.

Owen’s sister recast:

In previous flashbacks, Owen’s sister Megan was portrayed by Bridget Regan. However, when Owen is reunited with his sister in season 14 she will be played by Abigail Spencer. The role is said to be for several episodes, but since Spencer is also starring on Timeless we’re assuming it won’t be too large of a role. Not sure what this means for the whole Megan/Riggs/Meredith love triangle.

Fans will meet DeLuca’s sister:

Giacomo Gianniotti teased that fans will be meeting DeLuca’s sister this season on the show. Though not much has been said about the storyline, she will be coming to the hospital for a reason relating to her job. It’s not clear if she’s a doctor or related to healthcare in another way. But it does sound like the visit will only add on to the drama in DeLuca’s life.

Character’s that are gonezo:

Last season fans said goodbye to several characters! Stephanie Edwards (played by Jerrika Hinton), Leah Murphy (played by Tessa Ferrer), and Eliza Minnick (played by Marika Domińczyk) will not be appearing on the show anymore.

Here’s the regular cast that is returning:

Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw), April Kepner (Sarah Drew), Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams), Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), Ben Warren (Jason George), Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson), Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti), and Catherine Avery (Debbie Allen).
