The Grey’s Anatomy season 13 mid-season finale brought another major disaster to Seattle while Alex prepared for the worst case scenario.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13 mid-season finale recap:

Alex

It’s the last day of Alex’s guaranteed freedom and he can’t stop talking about the possibility of being sent to jail if is court case goes bad. Trying to stay positive, Meredith doesn’t want to talk about it and definitely doesn’t want to drink as though they’re saying goodbye to Alex. It might be a bad omen that as they’re arguing a building collapses in front of them.

Amongst all the drama with the wreck, Jo starts freaking out to DeLuca because she was called in to testify at court. She’s worried that they’ll ask about her name change and she’ll be forced to answer. If that happens, it will be public record and the husband she’s running away from can easily find her.

In the supply closet, Alex runs into Jo. Even though she asks if he heard that she got called to testify, she says that they shouldn’t talk about it. But Alex is worried that they may not get a chance to talk after the trial if things don’t go his way. So he takes the chance to apologize for the things he said to her, specifically when he called her “trash.”

A chance encounter in the elevator has Jo making her big confession to Alex. Just in case it comes out in court, Jo tells him the truth about her marriage. She admits that she can’t leave her husband because she’s hiding from him and her real name isn’t even Jo. The only reason that Jo wouldn’t marry Alex was because of this, and by trying to protect Alex she only caused them harm. Jo also tells him that if she has to run, it’s because of her husband and not Alex.

After Jo’s admission, Alex is worried about Jo and tells Meredith. He doesn’t want to ruins Jo life with the trial, but Meredith says that it’s his life on the line right now. Despite what Meredith said, Alex goes to Bailey to get ready for the future. He then lets Meredith know that he plans to take the plea deal so that they don’t have to go to court. Of course she’s outraged to hear his plan but no matter what she says, Alex has already made his decision.

She isn’t done trying though, Meredith calls Alex and leaves him a voicemail. She doesn’t want him to to just give up and take the blame for something without fighting. Meredith is ready to fight for him, but first he has to fight for himself. It looks like the call gives Alex pause, but fans won’t now what decision he makes until Grey’s Anatomy returns.

Weber

All of the victims from the collapsed building are being sent to Grey Sloan Memorial and it’s all hands on deck. Bailey gives DeLuca the job of taking photographs of all the incoming patients while Eliza joins the team early to help out with the accident. Weber is thrown off when Eliza mentions filling him in before she starts.

Before going into surgery, Maggie and Weber run into Eliza who’s still trying to help out where she can. Since they won’t get to sit down and talk, Eliza offers to send Weber some papers on the transition she has planned. Which confuses Maggie who thinks that Weber and Eliza will be working together. At that, Eliza says that Weber should talk to Bailey.

Dealing with Eliza has an affect on Weber, and he’s off his game during surgery. After yelling at Stephanie, Weber starts to have a hard time seeing clearly and before they know it the patient is bleeding out. Weber tries to save her, but it’s too late.

After being in surgery all day, Bailey finally touches base with Weber. He confronts her right away about the teaching program even though he basically already knows. The fact that she waited so long to tell him bothers him, plus the fact that he was the only to teach Bailey and now she’s taking that responsibility away from him.

Maggie doesn’t like it either, and goes to Jackson about it. Even though Weber doesn’t think that it’s a fight that can be won, Maggie shows him how many doctors are willing to stand up for him. Many of them were taught by Weber and want to see more taught under him.

Arizona

Arizona and Eliza are working together on a patient, but things are a bit odd. It’s clear that Eliza has a thing for Arizona but the later is playing it cool. Once Eliza leave, Arizona brags to her patient that she’s “winning.”

Eliza crosses paths with Arizona again and can’t help but come out to Arizona. She wants to make it clear that she’s trying to flirt with Arizona. Even though Arizona admits that she can tell Eliza is flirting, and she is attractive, her attitude throws Arizona off. Even though Arizona agrees to go out with Eliza, she’s still a bit annoyed that Eliza is acting like she owns the hospital.

Ben

One of Leah’s patients asks to see a priest to make a confession before dying but since she can’t find, she basically forces Ben to do it. What they learn is a bit shocking, the man was the landlord of the building that collapsed and he knew something was wrong with it. Before he can explain further, the man starts to have a seizure. Now Ben has to struggle with wether or not to tell the police.

While an angry mob wants to find the landlord and confront him, the mother of the girl that died is able to get into his room. She convinces Ben that she’s the landlords wife, and when ben leaves she tries to suffocate the landlord. They catch her before it’s too late though.

The incident causes Ben to go see Bailey, and even though they have a rule about not talking about work they decide to break that rule. Bailey is confused to hear that Ben was mistaken for a priest but is more worried about what’s going to happen with Alex.

Owen

The patient that Riggs and Owen are working on has both a wife and girlfriend waiting to hear on his condition. It brings up old feelings for Owen as he still hasn’t really forgiven Riggs for cheating on Owen’s sister. They end up having a heart to hear, when Owen admits that he’s made his own mistakes in the past and cheated on his first wife.

The two have had a rocky history, but Owen ends up admitting to Riggs that he’s having the same baby problems he had with Cristina again with Amelia. Talking it out with Riggs makes him feel better about trying to work things out with Amelia.

But when Owen goes home for the night he finds a note from Amelia that makes it seem like she’s ending things. Fans will have to wait for the show to return to find out where these two stand.
