Grey’s Anatomy season 13, episode 7, “Why Try to Change Me Now,” brought in Dr. Eliza Minnick to help make the hospital better and sent the staff into a panic.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13, episode 7 recap:

Amelia and Owen start off the day arguing about being late because of needing gas for their car. When Alex over hears, Amelia feels the need to explain to him why she hasn’t had the baby talk with Owen yet. It basically just makes it sound like she’s more worried about it than she should be.

Catherine and Bailey continue their path to try and fix the teaching program by bringing in Dr. Eliza Minnick to assess the situation. It looks like they’re not letting anyone know why it’s happening though.

So when the staff gets a vague email about an education consultant coming to assess the program, the doctors start to freak out. Alex thinks that he was the catalyst because of what happened with DeLuca. The residents think that it might because of what happened with Ben and his patient that died.

Weber gets upset when he finds out about the assessment because no one gave him the heads up. Bailey is able to calm him down by explaining that it’s just to see if there’s anything they can do better. He only gets agitated again when he finds out that she’s already there and talking with the residents.

Eliza meets with the residents to learn more about what they think of the doctors that are teaching them. She says that they can say whatever they want because the room is a vault and nothing will get past the walls. That’s enough assurance to get the residents ready to talk.

Of course, the doctors can’t help but stand by and watch as their residents talk about them. It also gives them the opportunity to grill April about the fact that she’s joined the Tinder app. April says it was an impulse that she’s now regretting, and then the doctors scatter when Eliza sees them.

After the meeting, DeLuca joins Weber on his cases. Even though Weber presses him for information, DeLuca says that it was confidential. So Weber lets him leave. Meanwhile, Amelia and Owen continue to fight while treating a patient as Stephanie watches.

Eliza continues her assessment by watching Meredith in surgery. When Eliza questions Meredith on why she’s not letting Ben do more in the surgery, Meredith explains that she’s showing him how it’s done. Clearly that’s not the answer Eliza was looking for though, and thinks that residents should be allowed to actual practice in the operating room so they’re better prepared.

Once the surgery is over, Meredith yells at Weber for Eliza coming into the surgery. Weber tries to explain that Bailey is behind it all and he doesn’t think that she’ll even be around for very long. Meredith doesn’t want to hear it though, she just wants Eliza gone.

Maggie calls an emergency meeting with the others when she finds that they’ve been ranked. Surprisingly, Maggie is at the bottom of the list and it freaks her out. Jackson is happy to be at the top, and Amelia doesn’t seem to care at all about any of it. Maggie reports the news to Weber who just gets more mad because he doesn’t think Eliza has been around long enough to make any calls on how they’re doing.

Maggie gets the chance to talk to Eliza and it doesn’t go well. After hearing that her students seem to think Maggie doesn’t give them the time of the day, she’s left feeling even more uneasy. Weber over hears and goes to report to Bailey about what’s going on. He learns that Eliza is actually there to see if she wants to work at the hospital to improve the program. This might be the moment that breaks Weber and Bailey’s relationship.

April decides to actually go on a date from a Tinder match. Jackson is surprised to hear that she’s not only going out on a date, but that she’s on that app. It’s also news that Jackson came up as one of her matches and that’s how she knew he was on there too. With the way that he’s acting, it also appears as though he may not want her to be dating.

At home, Ben tells Bailey that the residents are loving Eliza. They know that the doctors are freaking out about it a bit. Meanwhile, Bailey remains uncharacteristically quiet and doesn’t even try to get more information out of him. She just wants to know if she’s doing the right thing.

Eliza goes to watch Amelia’s surgery and walks in to find her arguing with Owen. It’s clear that their married life is getting in the way of them working together. However, Eliza likes Amelia’s idea to solve the problem that they’re arguing about. And only adds that she thinks Stephanie should be assisting in the surgery.

After her run in with Eliza, Maggie assures Leah that she can tell her what needs to be done to improve her teaching methods. Leah says that sometimes Maggie goes too fast for her to keep up and it makes her feel like her brain is melting. It’s not clear if the messages gets through to Maggie because they then realize that the patient they’re working on is much worse than originally thought.

Weber is furious once more to learn that his patient is going to be used as a teaching opportunity. Because of her age and the risks involved Weber thinks that only the attendings should be operating on her. Eliza already got approval from Bailey though, and has Leah take the lead with Maggie giving her the steps.

When Leah is uncomfortable with doing a portion of the surgery, Maggie steps in. As Leah continues to observe, Maggie explains in steps what she’s going to do. The process appears to be working well since Maggie is open to improving. But Weber refuses to do the same with DeLuca so Eliza pushes him to it but “accidentally” slipping and cutting the patient. DeLuca steps up the plate but Weber is still furious with Eliza.

While observing the surgery, Jackson talks to April about her date. He thinks that maybe they shouldn’t talk about the dates they go on. April is worried that he doesn’t want her going out, but he says it’s just weird for him. Then April admits that her date was awful and Jackson seems relieved to hear it.

Amelia and Stephanie’s surgery is a success and they get to deliver the good news to his wife. It’s sobering for Amelia to hear that even though his wife is annoyed at her husband for doing something stupid and hurting himself, she can’t bear to spend the night without him. Meanwhile, Amelia had no problem sleeping at the hospital and then spent the day arguing with Owen.

Owen has definitely noticed that Amelia is avoiding him. When he confronts her about why she’s not sleeping at home, Amelia bursts out that she doesn’t want to have a baby. So Amelia tries going to Meredith’s for the night, Alex won’t let her though. Once Amelia admits that she told Owen the truth, Alex agrees to let her stay for the night.

It seems like Weber is the only one that thinks Eliza’s methods are out of control. Maggie isn’t happy with the fact that she’s not a good teacher but she agrees that things need to change. Arizona is able to confront Eliza too and learns that the list was just a way for her to learn names and wasn’t in any particular order.

Bailey is happy to hear that Eliza is seriously considering taking the job. But wants that the staff with hate Bailey for it and that Eliza won’t share the job with Weber. If Eliza comes, she wants to be the only one in charge of the teaching program.
