Grey’s Anatomy season 13, episode 6, “Roar,” revealed big changes coming to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13, episode 6 recap:

Alex has another court date, this time to set the trial. Even though he’s making it out like its not a big deal, it’s clear that he’s nervous. Meredith too, and she wants to go with him but Alex shrugs it off.

When Alex does get to court, there’s a long line to get checked to go in. A small chat with a woman in line has him dodging questions about why he’s there. But when she admits that she’s pregnant and has a rash, he jumps into doctor mode and tells her about the clinic. Meanwhile, DeLuca is with Jo as he waits to hear on a court date. She admits that Alex and her barely talk at all.

Owen tries to talk to Amelia about their failed attempt at getting pregnant. However, she says that she’s totally fine with it. He’s surprised to hear that she doesn’t want to talk about it but they get interrupted by an incoming emergency. When they get to talk later, Amelia seems to have changed her mind about wanting a baby right away. She says they shouldn’t rush into it and just have fun being newlyweds for a while.

Catherine wants to know why Bailey hasn’t replaced Alex yet. She doesn’t want to replace him until the court case is through. Even though Bailey thinks that’s fair, Catherine throws it in her face that she’s being too lenient just like she was on Ben. It looks like Bailey doesn’t have any choice now but to look for a replacement.

The woman that Alex met at court shows up to get her rash checked out. Hearing more about her symptoms has him even more worried, but Alex can’t get a surgeon to come down to the clinic so he goes looking for one himself.

Alex finds Bailey just as she’s talking with Weber about what happened in her meeting with Catherine. He comes in demanding answers from her at just the wrong time, pushing buttons when she’s trying to fight to keep him.

Despite not being so happy with him at that moment, Bailey brings Jo down to the clinic. They break the news that the woman might have cancer and they need to run more tests. After seeing the scans, Bailey confirms that it’s cancer which means she will have to terminate the pregnancy if she wants to treat it.

Alex doesn’t agree with the course of treatment and argues with Bailey which just annoys her. The situation gets worse when they go to talk to the patient and Alex pitches a different treatment to the patient without asking Bailey first. She keeps warning Alex without really telling him why he needs to be more careful, which isn’t really fair to Alex.

Even though Bailey tries to talk the patient into doing the chemo, she wants to go ahead with the surgery that Alex proposed so that the baby can live. Only then does Bailey agree, but her best friend and baby daddy starts to freak out. Alex is there to keep him calm while Bailey does the surgery.

After losing her young patient, Amelia reveals to Alex that she once had a son. But he was born without a brain and only lived for forty three minutes before dying. She got to hold him, and then she donated all of his organs. The experience almost killed her, Amelia tells Alex. No one in her family knows and neither does Owen. She’s worried that if she tells Owen that he’ll hate her. Especially since she’s relieved to mot be pregnant and everyone knows that Owen wants a family more than anything.

DeLuca tells Jo that they shouldn’t talk about the case anymore. He admits to seeing her talking with Alex and doesn’t think it’s a good idea. Now he can’t help but feel like she’ll eventually get back with him, saying she always chooses the bad guy.

Despite what happened with Alex’s patient, Bailey tells Catherine she won’t fire him. After giving a big speech to Catherine Bailey learns that there’s another problem that she’s worried about. Catherine thinks there’s a problem with their teaching methods and that’s why their residents keep needing second chances. The problem is that Weber is the head of the resident program.

Alex starts to talk to Meredith about the future and how he’s not always going to be around. Waffle Sundays needs to become a thing, Alex decides. He wants to start doing more things as a big family before he goes away. Meredith also needs to start being nicer to Amelia, since he won’t always be around for her.

For once, Meredith doesn’t argue with him. Probably because she’s so worried about what’s going to happen to him. He’s not saying much about the trial coming up which may not be a good sign. As a big fan of Alex, it worries me to hear him talking like this. Of course I hope that his little stint in the clinic isn’t permanent it almost feels like they’re trying to get him invested in it. Are the writers try to find a place for Alex if he can’t be a surgeon anymore? I hope not!

A new resident comes to shake things up at the hospital, but she’s not new at all. Leah is back at Grey Sloan Memorial and is making things all kinds of awkward. Arizona is furious and demands answers from Weber.

Leah doesn’t have a great introduction with the other residents who quickly gossip about her. However, Leah proves herself in the operating room with Maggie and Riggs. She reveals that it was one of Maggie’s articles that inspired her to pursue to becoming a cardio surgeon. Then it became her dream to work with Maggie which is what led her back to Grey Sloan Memorial.

When I heard that Leah wasn’t being brought back into the show, I wasn’t very excited about it. Her character’s storyline was quite a mess in Grey’s Anatomy season 10 and caused a lot of problems for some fan favorites. However, her new storyline could bring some intriguing changes to the show. For now I’m holding my judgement on wether or not her reintroduction was a good idea.
