Grey’s Anatomy season 13, episode 5, “Both Sides Now,” shifted the focus to Amelia and Owen while they prepared for the possibility of becoming parents.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13, episode 5 recap:

Bailey is ecstatic because one of her favorite patients, Granny June, is finally getting a liver transplant after waiting three years on the list. Knowing that DeLuca has been having a rough time, she decides to pull him in on the case and spread the joy.

What Bailey doesn’t know is that there’s another patient in the hospital that might need a liver transplant. After getting overheated, Weber’s patient starts to have liver failure. Her sister is a match but didn’t realize that she was pregnant and can’t donate part of her liver

Meredith and Weber realize that their patient won’t live through the night without a liver transplant. They turn to Bailey for help, who isn’t happy about it but agrees to ask. But they’re all surprised when the sweet old lady says Weber’s patient needs to find her own liver. Bailey is glad to keep her joy, but Meredith isn’t happy about it.

When the liver actually arrives at the hospital, Meredith considers trying to get it anyway. Alex warns Meredith that she might just make the situation worse if she tries to coerce Granny June. Things take an interesting turn when Maggie’s patient crashes in surgery but is an organ donor, and his liver is a match.

This storyline had some good reminders for the residents to always look for the bright side in things. Even though there were down sides to the day, and they lost one patient, they were able to save two of them.

Amelia is surprised to see April back at work, thinking it’s early. Only to realize that it’s later in the month than she thought and she’s actually late for her period. Before she can take a test, Meredith finds her being sketchy and Amelia confesses. Meredith isn’t interested in knowing until it’s for sure but thinks Owen might be happy to hear.

When Amelia goes to tell Owen, they get interrupted by Jackson and a crying Harriet. Owen is happy to help Jackson out and take Harriet until she stops crying and then drop her off at daycare. The crying seems to freak Amelia out a bit and she leaves without telling Owen the news.

Owen is equally confused by Harriet. He’s usually good with babies, but this one doesn’t seem to like him. Alex even checks Harriet out because she won’t stop crying, but as soon as he takes her she stops crying. Once Alex hands Harriet back to Owen, she starts crying again. Meanwhile, the news of Amelia’s maybe pregnancy is starting to spread as Meredith spills the beans to Maggie and Edwards.

Harriet continues to cry while Owen scrambles to figure out how to calm her. He even takes her into the x-ray room, hoping the dark will help. Ben comes but has no advice except to ask April for help. Meanwhile, April finds out about Amelia’s news and advises she tell Owen as soon as possible to avoid drama.

Later, April finds Amelia in the bathroom and asks why she hasn’t told Owen yet. Amelia admits to April that she didn’t know how to do this the last time she was pregnant because the father was dead. Owen, meanwhile, finally got Harriet to fall asleep and settles in to let her nap on his chest.

Owen ended up spending the whole day with Harriet and then went home to hear the news from Amelia. She left the pregnancy test on the table so he would see and they go to take it together. He’s excited just to hear she might be pregnant while Amelia seems apprehensive. When the test comes back negative, Owen is ready to keep trying but Amelia’s emotion is harder to read.

It’s hard to tell what’s going on with Amelia right now. It seems like she’s mourning the pregnancy that she had before and also has a bit of a mix of not being sure how to handle the whole situation. With the way that Owen is acting it doesn’t appear he even knows about what Amelia went through before. Again, Amelia not opening up to Owen could have a negative affect on their relationship.

After several episodes having a big focus on the Meredith, Riggs, Maggie love triangle, it was nice to get away from that for a while. There was one quick interaction between Meredith and Riggs — just enough to remind us that Meredith is still pushing Riggs away, though it does not overpower the episode.
