Longtime fans of Grey’s Anatomy will know that Alex and Meredith have always had a special bond, but some are worrying that the show might be taking them to another level.

Ever since Cristina Yang left, Alex has stepped up to be Meredith’s person. Although they’ve become closer friends than ever, it’s also meant a certain amount of sacrifice on Alex’s part. In the past he’s been able to pretty much do whatever he thought was best for himself without worrying about anyone else. Now, he often puts Meredith before anyone else. It makes him an amazing friend to Meredith, but a crappy boyfriend to Jo.

On the mid-season finale of Grey’s Anatomy fans watched in horror as Jo and Alex had in incredibly off day that ended in disaster. Even though Jo and Alex have always bonded in a way that no one else can understand because of their similar backgrounds, Jo still isn’t getting everything she wants out of the relationship. Constantly feeling like Meredith comes before her definitely puts a weight on their relationship. It didn’t help that Alex let slip that he felt like Meredith is the only one he can count on. Ouch.

Later that night Jo told Alex, “This isn’t working. I need someone in my corner. And the more I look at it the only person I have is me. And I don’t want to make you choose between me and your friends — your friend. But I can’t keep feeling like everyone’s second choice. Especially not yours.” Trying to turn things around Alex explained that Meredith had the ring that he was going to use that night to propose to Jo, which is why he kept brushing her off. Jo still wasn’t happy because she knew a ring wouldn’t change anything. The episode ended before fans really got to see an answer, but it wasn’t looking good for Alex.

With the first minute of the Grey’s Anatomy spring premiere released, it seems that Alex has moved back into Meredith’s house and Amelia has moved out. Admittedly they’ve lived together before, but now that Derek is out of the picture will things be different? We also know that Meredith’s life will be in danger after being attacked by a patient, which could be a catalyst for Alex to look at her in a new light. It’s clear from the promos that he’s very distraught to see her in the hospital and they get quite cozy.

It could just be a bit of paranoia by the fandom, but it would make sense for the writers to go this route since they set up Jo to look at it that way. The only way it seems that Alex could fix things with Jo is to stop being Meredith’s friend and we definitely don’t see that happening.
